Winners of Corto e Fieno 2023

The three highlight days of Corto e Fieno – Rural Film Festival have come to an end with the election of the winners of the 2023 edition. An independent and research festival that continues to tell the story of rurality today, in Italy and around the world.

This year more space was given to the Mietitura section, entirely hosted by the Cinema Teatro Sociale in Omegna: four international feature films competing for the Audience Award, all introduced by a film from the Germogli section. At SOMSI in Gozzano, on the other hand, the Frutteto and Germogli sections were screened entirely; finally, in the evening, the jury assigned the awards for the 2023 edition.

This year the festival does not end here, however: two focuses will accompany us in October to continue talking about cinema and rurality. First appointment on Saturday, October 21, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., at SOMSI in Gozzano, for a conference on rural cinema with screenings: speakers will be CISV ETS with the I.N.RU.N. Project – European youth inspiring new rural narratives co-financed by the Erasmus+ program, the Mente Locale festival and the Piedmont Region. We will then return to Villa Nigra (Miasino) on October 29 for a day dedicated to the wolf figure in cinema, art, and literature.

There will also be no shortage of OFF events, in Gravellona on October 25 and Cascina Cuccagna on November 11.

Thanks to all of you and thanks also to us, tireless team that has been working for months to build the festival.

And here are the awardees of the fourteenth edition of Corto e Fieno!

BEST SHORT FILM
Sa ‘ilgiadora de su tempus by Filippo Biagianti

Moving between dream and memory, the director poetically renders the powerful protagonist at the center of the film, taking the viewer back to a time long gone.

BEST ANIMATED SHORT FILM
Varken (Pig) by Jorn Leeuwerink

For rendering the consequences of exploitation of the planet, through a non-trivial metaphor and striking use of characters/animals and using caustic irony and complex storytelling, the film shows man’s persistence in pursuing bad choices.

SPECIAL JURY AWARD
Sorta Nostra by Michele Sammarco

A tale that starts from a personal story to open a glimpse into a world that could die if not cared for with love.
Unexpected choice of the counter-field in the dialogue scenes, helping to create a poetic and evocative montage.

BEST BEAST AWARD
My Name is Edgar and I have a Cow by Filip Diviak

For painting an unexpected and ironic relationship, showing how the (cumbersome) presence of an animal, can change a person’s life.

SAME AWARD
The Goats of Monesiglio by Emily Graves.

The film is an accurate portrayal of the production mechanism of a small bi-family-run farm and the professional and relational dynamics between humans and animals.

ASILO AWARD
Innesti by Sandro Bozzolo

A powerful story, everything that Asilo Bianco has been trying to do on the ground for 18 years is here: a family that is the community and sustains the lifeblood that makes people feel good, with the daily commitment and effort of being together.

SOMSI AWARD
Tufo by Victoria Musci

For the civic value of a courageous project that tells the story of a man who is an example of integrity and resistance against the Mafia.
